EVENT 7: “OPERATION ADVENTURE WEEK” AT THEMBALETHU
The 8th Annual “Operation Adventure Week” was held at Thembalethu HBC between 2nd – 6th July 2007, with 130 children between the ages of 9 and 16,from 11 villages in the Nkomazi region, participating. Split into teams named after an animal or reptile with dedicated team colours and war-chants, these children participated in a variety of indoor and outdoor events that have been designed to educate, build team spirit, develop group participation and create a sense of belonging.
This event, which was filmed by the South African Broadcasting Corporation, was run by adult members of the Thembalethu Youth-in-Action team and other volunteers, and activities included lessons in singing, drama, dance, cooking, arts & crafts, gardening, chess, HIV education, life skills and sports.
One of the highlights of the week was the arrival of the Gingerbread Man with a huge cake and hundreds of muffins and biscuits, all with the compliments of the Mugg & Bean organisation (see feature story).
